 THE DISTRICT

The Central Union High School District is composed of three high schools: two comprehensive high schools and one alternative high school, including a growing adult education population.  All three schools are equipped with modern, state of the art computer technology in classrooms and offices.  An aggressive rehabilitation program is in progress for the original comprehensive high school.  The community has been very supportive of the public school system in El Centro.

District enrollment is approximately 4,236 students with an ethnic population of approximately 81% Hispanic.  We have a dedicated staff of 221 certificated employees and 185 classified employees.

The district is large enough to offer opportunities for advancement, yet small enough where administrators know staff members personally.  The administration and teaching staff are dedicated to the development of outstanding educational programs for all students.

THE COMMUNITY

El Centro is the county seat of Imperial County.  It is strategically located in the Imperial Valley as a service and retail center for a strong agribusiness economic base and a rapidly expanding resort and recreational economy.  The warm climate invites winter visitors from Canada and northern parts of the United States to enjoy golf, fishing, water sports and other desert recreational activities.  Situated 13 miles north of the Mexican border, 58 miles west of Yuma, Arizona, and 117 miles east of San Diego, approximately 40,000 people reside within the district boundaries.

The climate of the Imperial Valley is warm and dry.  More sunshine is recorded in Imperial Valley than in any other area in the United States.  The summers are extremely warm, but the autumn, winter and spring seasons are delightfully warm, sunny and dry.
